WEATHER: Part I

Weather: Part I
Iceland.
“If you don´t like the weather, wait five minutes!” is a phrase commonly used among Icelanders. Ever-changing weather conditions and unpredictable nature affect our way of thinking and the way we create.
The focus in this project is set on the local crafts and its connection to the weather. Iceland and Icelanders have a strong connection to the sea. Due to its natural conditions of rocky mountains and infertile soil settlers formed homes along the coastline and therefore the development of sea industry was inevitable.
The project has exhibited in Design March 2016.
Questioning is one of the basic methods of gathering information but there are many ways of doing so. We believe that people are more receptive of the written form then direct confrontation and therefor more willing to give information that they possess.

Gathering
An open ended collection of objects, materials, books, news and articles that sparked our interest when being in the mindset of a weather hoarder. We used the concept of Cabinets of Curiosity for this part of the research. This is a term for a collection of things that interest you and are all connected in one way or another.

Observation is the action or process of observing something carefully or in order to gain information. Being inside looking out. What do you see? Same country but different surroundings, or very similar maybe? We got obsessed about these live weather webcams that are documenting every second all over Iceland.

WEATHER: Part II

Weather: Part II
China.
Part II takes place in Xianqiao Village in Chongming Island, right outside of Shanghai in China. While Iceland has the population of almost 330.000 on an island 103,000 km2, Chongming Island has roughly twice as much people on an island that is a hundred times smaller.
From a big variation of local resources in every aspect, Chongming Island becomes somewhat sustainable. We stayed 45 days in the Xianqiao village. Through observation, communication and our personal perception of the place, we found a path for our project. We are using local materials and production to find a process that makes a byproduct from locals´ daily life.
